Frequently asked questions.......

For many people hypnotherapy is a new experience and there are plenty of questions that require answers before feeling comfortable in booking a session.

What is hypnotherapy?

"Hypno" comes from the Greek word meaning "to sleep" so, taken literally, it means "sleep healing".

How does it work?

Your mind and body are one. By tapping into your subconscious mind through an altered state of awareness, (hypnotic trance, a little like daydreaming) you have the ability to change any negative or restrictive behaviour patterns. By changing your subconscious thought patterns your mind then supports your body with any changes you want to make, rather than trying to resist them.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Totally safe. Hypnotherapy has been used by many civilisations for hundreds of years. In 1845 surgeon James Esdaile carried out over 2,000 operations including amputations under hypno-anaesthesia, and in 1955 the British Medical Association accepted hypnotherapy as a valid therapeutic technique. Hypnotherapy is available on the NHS. However most G.Ps still do not know enough about the subject to comfortably issue referrals, hence it is still a rarity.

Will I lose self-control?

Absolutely not. You will have total control over both your mind and body throughout the session. If at any point you wish to end the session and walk away you will be able to do so safely. What you have seen on TV and stage is stage hypnosis, not clinical hypnotherapy. No-one can be made to do anything against their will. This is why hypnotherapy will only work for you if you are ready to make the changes you desire.

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Almost anyone can be hypnotised, some people take longer to go into trance than others. Resistance can come if the person is not comfortable enough with the therapist or does not feel relaxed enough or is not ready to "let go". There are some medical conditions where hypnotherapy should be refrained from, most notably epilepsy and schizophrenia. Your safety is paramount, and during your initial consultation, your medical background will be discussed.

How many sessions will I need?

Every individual is different so it's hard to be exact. The matters concerned can determine how many sessions you will need. Generally if you want to give up smoking, 1 session; fears and phobias, 1-2 sessions; weight management varies depending on the underlying cause; matters such as abuse, trauma or addictions can take up to 6.
